I did not plan to make it to one of my main projects since Movie Scene Map, Castle Map and World Train Map are quite famous, however I would like to improve Sunshine Atlas because I love this project.
I and some of my friends use it for travel planning in the winters because Norway is very cold then, and it is handy to see where we can fly to somewhere hot and comfortable.
(Also thank you for submitting Sunshine Atlas here on HH!)
First off, I can’t find anywhere that you define the differences between the city or town sizes. For example, what is the difference between a regional city, a major city, and a city break? Is that just by population, or are there other considerations as well?
Also, how do you define the climate types? E.g., what is the difference between subtropical and continental?
For all of my writing and development, I depend on the “Define on First Use” or DOFU rule. And I’m not seeing much DOFU here.
The UI seems very interesting, but some of the dots seem to disappear into the background at certain scales. You might want to consider adding a black border around the dots, or something to help them stand out more.
Climate gets defined based on for example how much it is raining, how hot it is or the amount of sun. I have not fully developed this function yet, so just put it as a visualisation rather than a fact.
I think continental is something where it is a bit colder while subtropical is a bit warmer with the same amount of rain.
The website is a bit mess right now and I have not created the definitions well enough. They were put on randomly. This is something which should be fixed.
I agree with the UI, especially on Greenland where the dots are blending with the map. Sunshine Atlas is a way for me to experiment with design and functions, which I can later use on my other websites.
Each feedback is deciding how my projects will get shaped in the future. For example, I planned for Movie Scene Map to only show around 1000 locations, but because of feedback it shows 37 000 locations. Feedback gives me data to shape the projects better.
