A lot of roads in the US seem to be designed to be completely oblivious to pedestrians. Some years ago I was doing contracting work there and the company had put me up in the nearest hotel to the office. I could see the building from the hotel but there was physically no way to walk there without risking death due to speeding cars and trucks. I tried to find a non-suicidal route one day and it took something like half an hour cutting through properties and at one point pushing through undergrowth to get there.

Eventually I found out that there was a bus used by cleaning and maintenance staff that I could catch if I walked several blocks in the opposite direction and that stopped in front of the office building. I was the only non-minimum-wage person I ever saw on the bus the entire time I caught it.

They're not oblivious to pedestrians, they want the pedestrians dead. Or at least to go away. Actively hostile.

Like the malicious-compliance bike lanes I've encountered, which end abruptly forcing you into four lanes of oncoming motor traffic. Lines painted on the pavement to capture federal funding allocated to public and alternative transportation.

Only people with cars deserve to be there. Everything else should perish.
