In fact, this comparison makes Ably far more cheaper than free since not only they are available globally, but they have solved almost all the headaches in realtime impotency and failover, close to zero downtime, and are highly unlikely to shut down.
I won't trust something that claims to be $0 only for them to shutdown in a few years because they are not making enough money.
