Germany pays the most into the EU and the rising AFD party is saying those economics are not in Germans' best interest. One perspective is that EU countries like France need Germany more than the other way round.

  Any party who is not in power will say just about anything to get the power. If Germany was not in EU, AfD would be screaming at the top of their lungs to join etc. In today’s day/age people all that up on socials etc

    If you threaten to leave (ie you turn off money supply), then you’re able to use the leverage to gain the change you want, possibly strengthening the EU.
