I had a chest x-ray a few years back to confirm a broken rib. The radiologist (or at least the person conducting the x-ray) commented on how large my lungs were, and it prompted them to ask me if I was a smoker. Apparently, if you're a smoker, your lungs have to grow larger in order to compensate for the loss of capacity that smoking wreaks upon them - or at least this was the conclusion they had come to.
I explained that I used to be a competitive swimmer, and still do quite a few active things whereby I end up breathing pretty hard and using my lungs to capacity. Purely anecdotal, it would seem that there isn't enough evidence for either of the above conclusion.
However, the moral of the story is: don't take up smoking! Cancer is just the final tip of a long spear of risky, unpleasant, life-threatening shit that can be caused by smoking.
