"Hello everyone. I have to break some news regarding the Smash 64 Recomp. Recently, I came to the realization that code written by the other dev I've been working with contained LLM usage. I had to remove him from the recomp team, although I observed that he did work on a lot of it manually; his beliefs weren't aligned with mine. Because of this, the release has been delayed, as I'll have to work through and refactor all the code that was written unconventionally. While this is hard to hear, it doesn't warrant a personal attack on the other developer. He handled the news in a good manner, and we came to good terms. I hope everyone can understand, and I want the best for the development of this recomp. Thank you. " https://discord.com/channels/1374083583739826328/13937075034...
I don't mind, since I am still allowed to submit mods, which is what I originally wanted to do. It was just a weird experience to be very transparent about my AI usage and then have it released to a hostile community and be scapegoated so that it can come out without negative AI connotations being attached. Functionally, nothing is different; I haven't even been removed from the org because this whole thing is just a PR stunt to release software in this modern era of extreme division among computer users.
That's why I am making this post: extreme movements are growing online. From Software Experts to just Normal Users, people are choosing sides; AI slop witch hunters looking through dangling git commits for any AI traces to add you to a slop project list for others to avoid using, and on the other extreme we have AI token maxxers entering psychosis. I feel like user-to-user tension has never really existed at this scale on the internet; Mario vs. Sonic or PC vs. Console just doesn’t compare. For many people, content creators and developers, writing code is their job. These people often feel artistic, which leads to a really hard, ancient discussion about creating art and how to do it properly, untainted, unadulterated, pure, honest, true, real, non-slop, spiritually, faithfully, honestly, sincerely, etc. Users and experiencers have always wanted their performer to signal that they truly thought about the users, themselves, or the world when making their experience. It makes it feel special. So the accusation is one of carelessness and lack of intention, which absolutely cannot be true:
People arguing the machine has no place in art are losing sight of the human still required to be in the loop to create something amazing. People arguing that the machine is the best place for art are losing sight of the human that is still required to be in the loop to create something amazing.
Anyway, I’ll be going back up my mountain to work on some non-computing projects, and hopefully next time I return to the internet, the conversation will have improved...
