I understand the Hubbard Handicap, but the delta between the Metacritic Metascore - at 46 - and the observed quality of the film is honestly unprecedented. It wasn't a 46, it wasn't a 56, but at least in the mid 60s, and that's being pretty hardassed about a somewhat rocky subplot and a few misses at the end of the 2nd act. I would ballpark it in the low 70s, personally - an almost 30 point swing from the Metascore.

It's honestly a pretty darn good movie, and I just don't remember the last time something got underscored so badly. My theory here is that people on the right hate it because Climate Worrying Is For Pansies, and people on the left hated it because it was too glib about a Serious Matter. Those metacritic numbers can be hard on stuff that gets anger from both sides.

Your comment left me wanting to dig into it - Big money having been spent I was expecting some sort of action movie, but it's a black comedy [1] ... reading the plot summary it sounds pretty good. Yes some people have forgotten how to laugh at the absurd / sad things in their reality - all too serious and the lower scores were probably due to bruised sensitivities. I'll be putting it on my list of films I should try and watch when it makes it to the tv channels.
