A client in another country wants to pay you. A bank transfer takes three to five days, loses a few percent to fees and conversion, and sometimes gets stuck in compliance review. Payment platforms take their own cut and can freeze your balance.

That is why more freelancers ask to be paid in stablecoins like USDT or USDC. The money arrives in minutes and costs from a few cents to a few dollars. But crypto payments have their own rules: choose the wrong network or skip a check, and the money can be lost for good. Here is a simple, safe scenario.

Step 1. Agree on the currency and the network

Choose a stablecoin: USDT and USDC are pegged to the US dollar, so your fee won't drop 10% overnight the way Bitcoin can. Then agree on the network in writing. The same USDT exists on Tron, Ethereum, BNB Chain and other networks, and they are not interchangeable. Tron and BNB Chain are usually the cheapest.

Step 2. Set up a wallet you control

You can receive funds on an exchange, but a non-custodial wallet gives you full control: no account freezes, no withdrawal limits. Install it from the official source, back up your seed phrase and turn on a PIN or biometrics. Check that it supports the agreed network.

Step 3. Share your address the right way

Send the address for the specific network together with its name, for example "USDT, Tron (TRC-20): T...", or as a QR code. Ask a new client for a small test payment first: it costs cents and confirms everything works.

Step 4. Send a clear invoice

A crypto invoice should include:

• the amount and currency (for example, 1,200 USDT);

• the network and your wallet address;

• the payment deadline;

• who pays the network fee (usually the sender);

• if you price in dollars or euros, the exchange rate source and the date it is fixed.

Step 5. Confirm the payment on-chain

Don't trust screenshots. Ask for the transaction hash (TxID) and check it in your wallet or a block explorer such as Tronscan or Etherscan. The payment counts once it is confirmed and the amount is on your address.

Step 6. Keep records for taxes

In most countries, crypto income is still income. For each payment, save the date, amount, its value in local currency, the client's name and the TxID, and check how such income is taxed where you live.

Step 7. Decide what to do with the funds

You have three options:

1. Keep it in stablecoins as a dollar-denominated savings buffer.

2. Swap part into other assets.

3. Cash out to your local currency through a licensed exchange or service available in your country.

Whatever you choose, keep a small reserve for future network fees, or use a wallet that lets you pay them in the token itself.

Common pitfalls to avoid

- Wrong network. USDT sent on Ethereum to a Tron address will not arrive. Always confirm the network.

- "Overpayment" scams. A "client" sends too much and asks you to refund the difference. With crypto, check that funds actually arrived before refunding anything.

- Fake payment screenshots. Only a confirmed on-chain transaction is proof of payment.

- Address poisoning. Never copy your own or a client's address from transaction history; use the address from your wallet's Receive screen.

How IronWallet fits this workflow

IronWallet is a non-custodial multi-chain wallet: you receive USDT on Tron, Ethereum or BNB Chain in one app, and nobody can freeze your earnings. You can pay network fees in the token you send, swap assets inside the app and back up your seed phrase in encrypted form to Google Drive or iCloud.

The bottom line

Getting paid in crypto is fast and cheap, but only if you are precise. Agree on the coin and network, test new clients with a small payment, verify every transaction on-chain and keep clean records.

Follow these seven steps and crypto becomes just another reliable way to get paid. If you need a wallet for it, IronWallet is free for iOS and Android.
