The US uses ~600,000 tons of diesel per day, so releasing 800,000 tons before the midterms doesn't seem like it would lower prices very much. It makes me wonder why Trump is even bothering with this, besides just optics to look like he's doing something about energy prices.

Why would Putin do this when the US is aiding Ukraine? Starlink is being used to drone bomb Russia.

Because the US might reduce support for Ukraine in return. This is why it’s important for Europe to continue to rapidly decouple from the US.

I really want to tell you you're wrong and downvote you but unfortunately I think you are correct.

I hope I’m wrong. Just calling out what I see and where the knowledge graph points me. Germany has the ability to build Patriot missiles for Ukraine, Canada has committed to building drones for them. Scale up and let’s get this conflict over with. Not much more Russian oil refining and production capacity to impair to do so. Bomb whatever is needed to bring the Russian economy to failure. Refineries, production facilities, dark ships moving product with AIS off, all legit targets.

Ukraine claims its strikes have taken out more than half of Russia's oil refining capacity - https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/ukraine-claims-its-strike... - October 5th, 2026

So Russia probably can't actually export diesel w/o choking the war or the domestic economy but by the time the moron-in-chief figures that out he'll have already sold out Ukraine. Well, more than he has already.
