I did 3D modeling freelance work a couple years ago, so I wanted to take it a step further and place the desktop inside an interactive 3D environment.
So I hopped into Blender to create a 2005-style room by hand with lots of movie, game and music references and brought it into the browser using Three.js. Getting the lighting and .glb models to look good while keeping the scene performant took a lot of iteration.
After that I recreated a Windows 98-like OS to show my projects and contact links (and some more niche references). It also includes API integrations for the newsletter signup and a representation of my X profile.
I know Windows 98 was not the typical OS in 2005, but I liked combining that type of interface with a mid-2000s room.
The result is a functional classic Windows experience with working applications. Even works fine on mobile.
