I stayed at an Airbnb in Shinjuku back in 2017. It seemed like it was already banned at that time. When I got to the room, there was a sign in the bathroom that said something to the effect of, “if anyone asks who you are, tell them you’re Mark’s friend.” Basically, lie for them. Thankfully, I didn’t run into anyone.

This I can understand. I had to throw out some trash when I was there. When I got into the trash room there were probably 2 dozen trash cans, two levels of them, and each one had a sign in Japanese. I had to use Google’s live translate to figure out what each of them was for. Some were pretty unclear. I probably spent a good 10 minutes trying to figure out what to do, and I’m still not confident I got it right.

Good, now do the entire country next. AirBNB (and its clones) do nothing but make things worse for actual residents of a place.
