To me, the fundamental issue is whether we fall for the notion of happiness as a machine or people "programmed" to agree with us and deliver endless material goods,[0] or the more durable notion of happiness as caring for others and helping them survive and thrive as we do for ourselves.

This is not Sunday morning idealism. It is the truth of life as evidenced by the unselfishness of our parents, who gave us so much and let us flourish as individuals, or who failed by selfishly wanting self-validation and raising conforming copies.
