This was a good Asianometry video, one of the more interesting things I learned is how the CCP learned from and dealt with protests to the trash incinerators when building projects likely to be NIMBY'd. They have built 100s since, not by forcing them by the state, but by working with the local community and increasing transparency.

We in the West could learn from this if we want to.
