It was the greatest state to ever exist. "Live and Let Live" was, for generations, a Habsburg principle. (See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_von_Habsburg -- noting "the centuries-old Habsburg principle of "live and let live" among ethnic groups, peoples, minorities, religions, cultures and languages.")

The ethnic states which gradually replaced the HRE in Central Europe were, and remain, total disasters in comparison. Modern Germany is, yet again, a powder keg.

Today we pour one out for the HRE.

"Neither Holy, nor Roman, nor an Empire" -- Voltaire, allegedly.

Only 220 years ago? I thought it was close to 500 to 600 years.

Maybe you’re thinking of the Eastern Roman Empire, which, unlike the HRE, was actually a continuation of the classical state?

I am not sure about the Eastern Roman Empire. But I thought the Roman Empire ended with the fall of Constantinople.
