Most people don't contribute to open source, let alone donate to those projects.
It was really just a labour of love of people putting their personal projects on social coding sites like GitHub and throwaway projects.
The resume padders were filtered out in the interview process with leetcode anyway since employers, HR and the decision makers don't care about your OSS contributions or your GitHub.
And they certainly won't care now that AI is here.
Extensive relevant experience (and your network) is a much better signal than open source in the age of AI unfortunately.
Naturally, this means personal connection will be even more important now.
