This is a 2019 article. There was a more recent mishap (https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/trump-administration/us-gov...) which is still bad.

I flagged the OP because it's old, but your story is relevant and interesting, as it seems the incorrect map was AI-generated.

      > The State Department said it took “full responsibility” for the confusion

Love the childish damage control. What was the alternative, "A hacker edited our slides to embarrass us"?

Ha ha! Wow, the level of ignorance is staggering

Ok, this one seems to have a twin just released. I received from Gary Marcus' site:

    > The U.S. government shared a map of Africa that mislabeled every single country

how is this news at all. it was far most likely a dev/someone testing something and accidentally added it to prod.

considering all the other Ai snafus from this admin, I'd put my money on that being more likely
      • Jtsummers5 hours ago
This happened in 2019, unless time travel is possible it's probably not an "Ai snafu".

Someone in the administration used too much A1 on their steak

Five bucks says they have used an LLM to put the list together.

I’ll take that bet. It was in 2019.
    • eterm5 hours ago
      In 2019 that'd be impressive.

It's that damned Jabari tribe lobby in Washington pulling all the levers behind the scenes

That is part of their MO for sure. But the sloppy test data sneaking through is a plausible excuse.

And right after I just wrote that another scenario came to mind: resistance from low level insiders "accidentally" letting it happen to highlight the true incompetence of the administration.

As an American, it's about time more people became aware of how embarrassing and incompetent this country is.

Some part of me is glad that the US finally has an administration with a degree of professionalism this country deserves

      • bflesch5 hours ago
And it makes me feel better about my own government, while it takes news reporting bandwidth from other stories that are buried instead.

If Wakanda existed I’d have moved my family there years ago. America is embarrassing af.
    • iso16315 hours ago
Why would you assume a given country would take you?

(setting aside that in lore Wakanda wouldn't take anyone, fewer immigrants than North Korea)

How do you know this isn’t a marvel character’s HN post?
