    This edition : Norbert Wiener - He founded the field's root discipline. Cybernetics (1948) is the science of feedback and control in machines and living things. It predates the term "artificial intelligence" by eight years; the people who coined that term were reacting to him. - He stated the alignment problem in one sentence in 1960: be sure "the purpose put into the machine is the purpose which we really desire and not merely a colorful imitation of it." That's the field's central open problem, stated 65 years before frontier labs built safety teams around it.
