    Stupid question --- why doesn't Microsoft help them do this?

    Apparently, the answer is because service and vendor lock-in is much more profitable.

    Microsoft became wildly profitable by breaking the service provider model --- only to fall back into the model they broke.

    The more things change, the more tbey stay the same.
