I don't think it has anything to do with digital culture. I've been having "backrooms" dreams since maybe 5 years old (29 now), long before I'd ever touched a computer or the existence of iPhone or social media. I really think it's just 80's/90's economy postmodernist architecture invading our psyche; after all, for people around my age group and a little younger, most hospitals, schools, really institutions of all kinds that we grew up in just sorta looked like that. The backrooms is a picture of the real, unglamorous world we all grew up in. Not cleaned up for a photo shoot, not orchestrated, just purely institutional.
