When tractors were invented we got Luddites. When desktop publishing was invented we had people who preached metal plates (I worked at once such place and made metal printing plates with toxic chemicals even though there was a lovely PC on my desk and a laser printer.)
An even more cogent example is the printing press, which was widely derided as it might let people print things that weren't the truth, a lot like AI "safety" concerns.
If it had been as easy to complain then as it is now, we would have seen it.
