I haven't talked to my parents for about 6 years at this point. I grew up in a very violent and abusive household and my parents refused to admit that anything they did while I was growing up was wrong, yet the way they treated my brother who is 15 years younger than I am, changed drastically (for the better) when I cut contact with them.
It's painful to think about the fact that they could have chosen to be better parents but just chose not to, and only changed their ways due to me cutting them out and also showing to my younger brother that he can choose to do the same once he becomes an adult.
One of the most powerful ways that everyone has of making the future a better place is by holding abusive parents accountable and not letting the inter-generational childhood trauma keep getting passed on to the next generation.
