I'm a developer working with mid-sized companies in Germany. Over the past year, I've watched the economics of custom software shift dramatically. Internal tools that used to require a small team and three months can now be built by one person in one to two weeks. This post is about what that means structurally: SaaS losing its economic moat, the maintenance argument collapsing, and a new role emerging that's less about writing code and more about designing systems that fit how people actually work. I included some numbers on the SaaS slowdown and a historical parallel to the electrification of factories that I find almost uncanny. Would love to hear from others seeing similar shifts or pushback from those who think I'm overstating it.
