The answer can be whatever you want, as no one can agree what exactly "consciousness" is.

If you define "consciousness" as "something that humans have, but machines don't", then we'll always have consciousness.

If you define "consciousness" more mechanistically, like "being aware of something internal to one's self", then AI can already do this.

Your consciousness has already “lost control”. That you function at all is only by virtue that you have not been sufficiently fucked with to take it all away from you.

It is the framework of civilization layered out before you that allows your comfortable and convenient living. The economics of needs and means which afford your lifestyle.

You are right to be worried, only you do not properly understand the problem.
