It already was done 35 years ago to the day to Panama. In fact the US doesn't recognize sovereignty of other countries, in that aspect the current US administration is not an outlier or an exception but the norm.

Earlier today I said we were navigating uncharted waters, but that’s not quite true. As this article points out, we were at a similar point prior to WWI. What we have now that we didn’t then is nuclear weapons and ICBMs. If we, as a civilisation, decide to continue on this path, there will be nuclear proliferation, as this is the only current way a nation can use to force itself into a seat at the adults table.
