    vault.backup.bin

Why make it so easy to identify?

I wrote a similar utility but I append the data to a particular .jpg file in my extensive photo collection. The photo displays as normal and the date/time remains unchanged following a save.

Because security through obscurity is a 19th century maxim which is objectively ineffective at guarding secrets?

The security can remain exactly the same --- only the location is being obscured.

Why make it easier to find when there is no need to do so?

        Ever hear of "steganography"?

Because that is not how adversarial activity has ever worked, or ever will work, but unfortunately it is how most people - who are irrational, unprepared and lacking a threat model - think it works.

So your rational and prepared threat model requires making the target easily identifiable?
