Seems like this sort of classification would be a minimum job requirement for many working dogs. Herding dogs need to classify other animals into "sheep", "wolves", etc. A https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercy_dog was expected to distinguish friendly soldiers from enemy soldiers, the living from the dead, and probably a great deal more.
