  • If we had incredible amounts of "green" electricity, hydrogen -> syngas -> gasoline/diesel, would fill in the gaps where batteries just aren't great, or impossible. (Rockets.)

      The step of building up hydrocarbons by Fischer-Tropsch is capital intensive and requires an expensive machine which probably doesn’t become economical even with cheap syngas.

      Anybody reasonable gives up and goes to some kind of single entity fuel like methanol or butanol or dimethyl ether. The aviation industry is the one exception but half of that is that if they did get serious about sustainable aviation fuel they’d suddenly realize they should have switched to methane long ago.
