I am endlessly amazed that this thing ever got goahead. Truly bizarre.

I am surprised it passed fire safety inspections when I see the amount of fire safety that is done on new tunnels here in Switzerland. From pressurized evacuation tunnels to smoke evacuation system and all the testing before opening.

Somehow I think the magazine wants to make this more about Musk than the holes themselves. That's why the magazine puts his name first in the headline.

Somehow I think Musk has contributed to this by making all of his company's products inextricable from his persona.

So many transformative things in the US are like this: the iPhone, ChatGPT, Tesla, SpaceX, Google, YouTube, Amazon, Windows, Facebook, nVidia. It’s pretty cool that companies have a front man like they’re a cool rock band.

I think only Broadcom is that size of a tech company with no front man like that.

Tesla isn't transformative, unless you pretend the Prius never existed. Tesla exists because Toyota created the market for green cars with the Prius line. The Prius led to the CA and US green car incentives, which kept Tesla afloat during its many failures (and Tesla still relies on this incentive to achieve profitability; they would have had a quarterly loss earlier this year but for the incentive payments they got from other automakers).

I have no idea who Google, Youtube or NVidia's frontmen (frontmans? fronts-man?) are.

              Nvidia is Jensen Huang: https://www.instagram.com/commuter.ny/p/C71tPJgpmgw/?img_ind...

              That photo cements it.

Admittedly the other two are weaker, but back in the day Brin and Page were hotshots that were in the limelight. Things have changed since then, true. Youtube I'll leave off since it's now part of the conglomerate but Susan W was a huge figure in SV.

I don't think so; his name only appears five times.

By contrast, "Boring" appears 19 times, "Tesla" appears seven, etc. The only time he's mentioned in the article outside of the headline is when it (accurately, and without any sort of negative implication) speaks about his vision and goals for the tunnels.
